Tourism Leaders wary of Panic

Dispensers holding hand purification lotions greeted the estimated 45,000 conventiongoers walking the floor of the National Hardware Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center this week.
A few people sprayed some of the goo on their hands before entering, mindful that health organizations around the globe have warned about the spread of the H1N1 virus, also known as “swine flu.” So far, Las Vegas has been immune to the potentially damaging effects of panic resulting from a prospective pandemic. Even though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, working with the Southern Nevada Health District, confirmed two Clark County cases early in the week, there have been no convention or public-event cancellations in connection with the outbreak, believed centered in Mexico. Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority President and CEO Rossi Ralenkotter would just as soon it stay that way.
“In our conversations with our resort partners, we are not aware of any events canceling as a result of the outbreak,” he said. Ralenkotter said his staff has monitored the situation daily with the Health District. Las Vegas’ tourism marketing arm also has kept in close contact with the U.S. Travel Association, the national clearinghouse on travel and tourism developments.
“Travelers, like all citizens, should heed the advice of experts when determining how best to manage health concerns,” association President and CEO Roger Dow said. “According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, swine flu should not discourage people from traveling to or within the United States.”
